Most guys want to know how to wear a blue suit with brown shoes, but we’re here to demonstrate that black shoes, though often overlooked, are nonetheless a perfect pairing with a blue suit.

The important thing to remember is not all blue suits should be worn with black shoes. If the blue suit color is too light or vibrant then the suit overall skews more casual, making it less appropriate to wear a shoe as formal as black. In these instances we recommend a shoe in a shade of brown instead, (and remember, the darker the shade of brown, the more formal it looks).

So, how do you know if your blue suit is a good shade for black shoes? Here are a couple examples:

This first example shows how vibrant blue the suit color can be and still look great with black shoes. Though this color blue is generally paired with brown shows, which creates a much more relaxed look, wearing black shoes instantly elevates this look making it appear surprisingly formal. If the blue suit color in question is any lighter than this, we would recommend wearing brown shoes instead.

This next picture is a more typical example of how blue suits are generally worn with black shoes. Being more navy than blue, this darker color suit wears even better with the black shoes due to the low contrast between the two.

Remember, the pairing of blue or navy suits and black shoes makes an outfit more elegant, yet functional from business to formal settings. Dark colored socks should be worn to match the trousers. A crisp, white dress shirt will create a flattering light/dark contrast in your outfit that demonstrates formality through the simplicity of the colors. For the most formal of attire, go with a french cuff shirt, for an added degree of elegance. If you want to impress at dinner with clients or with close friends, a blue suit and black shoe combo will do just the trick.
